Efficiency of Hydraulic Pumps

The efficiency of a hydraulic pump is a critical factor in the overall efficiency and reliability of a hydraulic system. Hydraulic efficiency is a product of volumetric and hydromechanical efficiency.

  1. Volumetric Efficiency

    • Hydraulic pumps never actually deliver the amount of fluid they are theoretically capable of delivering. The ratio of what they actually deliver to what they are capable of delivering, mathematically, is known as their volumetric efficiency.

    Hydromechanical Efficiency

    • Hydromechanical efficiency takes into account the amount of energy required to generate fluid flow and any losses due to friction. Once again, hydromechanical efficiency is always less than 100 percent, because some input energy is always wasted as friction.

    Considerations

    • Volumetric efficiency relates to internal leakage in a hydraulic pump and varies according to the construction of the pump and the speed, pressure and viscosity of the fluid being pumped. Thicker, more viscous, fluids leak less readily and increase volumetric efficiency; they also resist flow and decrease hydromechanical efficiency.
