What Insects Hatch in Koi Ponds
Building a koi pond requires an artist's sensibility and a technician's skill. Landscaping, a waterfall and the bright carp must be supported by a biological filter, engineered water movement and an efficient drainage system. Insects are part of the habitat. Does this Spark an idea?

Considerations
-
Koi ponds are not casual projects. They must show off koi colors and maintain a biological balance advantageous to koi. Large ponds must "backwash" periodically, removing effluvia-filled water and replacing it with filtered water. Such controlled environments are not conducive to insect breeding.
Types
-
Although Koi ponds are artificial habitats, several insects lay their eggs in their waters. Mosquitoes find hatching areas in submerged flower pots and shallow areas where water does not circulate. Dragonfly nymphs hatch from eggs laid on water plants and spend their youth underwater hunting other young fry. Water beetles hatch and spend their larval stage in the water.
-
Function
-
Some water breeders such as mosquitoes serve as food for fish and other insects. Others, such as the dragonfly and water beetle, occupy an intermediate position in the food chain, hunting other insects and controlling insect populations by gobbling up eggs. Pond keepers also start colonies of daphne flies for koi fry and water lice for adult koi.
