Pink flowering dogwood--Cornus florida var. rubra--is a small ornamental tree. Dogwood is a widely planted landscape tree; it is subject to pests and diseases that lead to bloom problems. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Anthracnose

    • Spot anthracnose is caused by a fungus, Elsinoe corni. In early spring, reddish-purple spots appear on the flower bracts. Flowers and leaves curl and drop as the fungus spreads. In severe cases, the tree does not flower.

    Leaf Blights

    • Leaf blights occur during wet springs. Botrytis cinerea causes fuzzy gray growth on dogwood leaves and flowers. Colletotrichum acutatum causes brownish spots on leaves. Eventually, the disease spreads to the flower bracts. Flowers develop spots, shrivel and drop.

    Other Problems

    • Drought and poor site conditions cause poor growth and bloom problems. Dogwoods grow best in well-drained soil. Heavy clay soil can impede root development and stunt growth. Dogwoods are also sensitive to pollution and heat stress and should not be used as a street tree.
