Checklist for Lift Installation

There are essentially two types of lift, or elevator: hydraulic and traction. Regardless of the type of elevator installed, there are numerous local, state and federal regulations that must be observed.

  1. Venting

    • Elevator hoistways must be vented in accordance with local building regulations, or the International Building Code (IBC). The IBC stipulates that if an elevator moves through three stories or more you must install vents that occupy 3.5 percent of the hoistway space or at least 3 square feet.

    Finishing

    • The floors of elevator cars and landing areas must be finished so they are flush and do not present a tripping hazard. Entrance sills must be grouted or otherwise finished so they can support the loads imposed on them.

    Flood

    • Certain elevator components -- hydraulic jack assemblies, counterweight roller guides, compensation pulleys and cables -- must, by necessity, be installed at the bottom of an elevator shaft. If located below the lowest floor or in a basement they should be constructed from flood-resistant materials because, under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), they cannot be insured for flood damage.
