High Lymphocyte Count in Horses

Horses can show their illnesses within their white blood cell counts.

Like humans, horses can have illnesses that show their presence through the blood. By analyzing the blood and specific cells, like lymphocytes, veterinarians can determine probable issues with the horse and develop a treatment plan.

Identification

Lymphocytes are part of the white blood cell family within the bloodstream. They provide a back-up defense system against foreign cells and help provide antibodies as well.

Effects

If a lymphocyte count is high within a horse's bloodstream, it could point to a number of problems. The count could indicate an issue such as Ross River, cancer or other persisting infection.

Features

Aside from the bloodstream, lymphocytes also reside in the lymphatic system of the horse. The lymphatic system works in conjunction with the bloodstream as part of the immune system. Once a foreign protein, such as a virus, is detected, the lymphatic system responds by multiplying the amount of lymphocytes to overtake and destroy the potentially harmful cell or molecule.
