Will Carp Eat Pond Grass?

Will Carp Eat Pond Grass? thumbnail
Carp eat all kinds of pond vegetation.

Carp eat a wide variety of aquatic grasses and weeds in ponds, including duckweed, hydrilla and watermeal. While they help control invasive weed species, they may also munch on prized grasses and plants you prefer to keep undisturbed. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Species

    • Grass carp, known as white amur, fall into the minnow family. In larger ponds and lakes, grass carp reach up to 20 pounds in weight and from 20 to 35 inches in length. The fish live for 10 years or longer and require more food as they grow bigger. Another species of carp, the koi, grows to just 12 inches in length. They also eat pond grass and weeds.

    Food

    • Carp eat just about anything, including submersed, emersed and floating plants. They even munch on grass along the shoreline by wiggling their bodies out of the water in order to reach the tasty treats. If you stock your pond with just a few carp, it takes longer to notice the decrease in plants.

    Sterile Carp

    • In some states, such as Texas and Tennessee, only triploid grass carp, a sterile form of the carp species, can be stocked in ponds. In Texas, you must obtain a permit from Texas Parks and Wildlife to buy the carp.
