How Are Labels Made?
Look around your house. Just about every product you own or have used has some kind of label. The labels tell you everything you need to know about that product. However, you may not know how that label is made.
-
Preparing the Label Material
-
Labels are made of many different types of materials including fabrics, plastics and especially paper. Before the label is printed and attached to the product, the material from which it is made must be prepared. For plastic labels, this may include molding, pressing and cutting out tags. For clothing labels, this step entails sewing together fabric tags.
Printing the Label
-
Next, labels are printed with the product design and other product information. This printing is done on huge, industrial printers that produce labels by the millions per day. Some products, such as CDs and soda, have label information printed directly on the product itself instead of on a separate material that is attached to the product.
-
Attaching the Label
-
Labels are attached to products usually with an adhesive that may be very light so that the label can be easily peeled off or very strong so that the label is affixed to the product permanently. Labels that are not attached with adhesive are sewn on with thread, tied to the product with string or plastic or attached by some other means.
