IPTV Vs. Satellite TV

IPTV Vs. Satellite TV thumbnail
Satellite dishes pull in programming for Satellite TV.

The transmission of television signals by digital means has created new ways for providers to deliver these signals. Satellite TV and the less-widely known IPTV are different ways to send and receive digital television (DTV).

  1. IPTV

    • IPTV is short for Internet Protocol Television, which sends television signals to a user through a broadband Internet connection. This can describe any type of content delivered via this method rather than any traditional broadcast source such as over-the-air (OTA) or cable TV. It often involves some form of Video on Demand.

    Satellite TV

    • Satellite TV involves a broadcaster or service provider beaming content to a satellite. The viewer accesses this through a satellite dish, and the signal is decoded for display on the TV by a receiver connected to the dish. Programming can be picked up either with a subscription to a satellite TV provider or free-to-air (FTA) channels and equipment.

    Function

    • As IPTV is simply a way of delivering television content via Internet connection, it can be viewed from other devices besides a TV, including a computer or Internet-capable cellular phone. Satellite TV can only be viewed through a TV connected to the satellite receiver. IPTV is also considered a form of switched video. The user only receives the programming requested. A satellite user gets all of the available content sent by satellite providers at any given time.
