What Does Organic Fertilizer Have That Makes Plants Grow Fast?

Compost is a common form of organic fertilizer.

Fertilizer delivers nitrogen, phosphate and potash, or potassium, to the soil. Organic fertilizer provides these nutrients through natural means, containing no synthetic ingredients.

Types

Organic fertilizer usually contains animal or plant byproducts such as manure, compost and bone meal. Some fertilizers also contain rock powders that supply important minerals.

Function

Fertilizer is a soil amendment, meaning it is mixed into the soil to improve the soil's quality. Plants require essential nutrients to build amino acids and proteins necessary for strong root systems and healthy foliage. Organic fertilizer generally has a slower nutrient release rate than inorganic fertilizer, so it's important to fertilize early to ensure the nutrients are available when the plants need them.

Considerations

When using manure as an organic fertilizer, make sure it is well-composted first. Bacteria and pathogens in the manure can contaminate the garden if fresh manure is used. Consider the source of your manure -- some manure contains weed seeds, which will cause problems in the garden.
