Why Use Polyester for Seat Belt Webbing?

Why Use Polyester for Seat Belt Webbing? thumbnail
Seat belts are usually made from nylon and polyester.

The webbing used to make seat belts must meet certain requirements under Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration standards. The belts must be durable, strong and flexible. Several types of materials meet these standards, including polyester.

  1. Breaking Strength/Abrasion Resistance

    • Federal law requires seat belt webbing to withstand the force of a crash, and be resistant to damage from abrasive seat belt hardware. Polyester is known to be strong, durable and not easily ripped.

    Fade/Mold Resistant

    • Polyester is easy to clean and retains its color; it resists mildew and will not fade in the sun. Polyester meets federal requirements for seat belt webbing.

    Water Resistant

    • Polyester does not stretch, wrinkle or change shape when wet. These traits allow it to restrain a body during a crash.
