Keeping your smoke detectors in good working order is an essential part of fire safety.

A smoke detector may well save your life one day, but in the meantime they can be a nuisance. Though they usually sit quietly on the wall, a couple of problems could cause a false alarm. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. False Alarm From Smoke

    • If you have recently used a fireplace, but you closed the flue before the coals had finished smoldering, smoke may still build up in the home to the point where it can set off the smoke detector. Other sources of smoke include that from kitchen appliances.

    Low Battery

    • Many residential smoke detectors run on batteries, and when these batteries begin to lose power, the smoke detector occasionally will chirp to alert you that the batteries must be replaced.

    Dirty Smoke Detector

    • Dirt or dust collecting inside a smoke detector may interfere with its operation and cause false alarms. Consult your manual for instructions on cleaning your detector.
