What Size Pump Do I Need for My Koi Pond?
Koi ponds are a great way to add some beauty to your backyard and create a new hobby for yourself at the same time. To stay clean, a koi pond must have an appropriately sized pump installed. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Function
-
The size of the pump needed for your koi pond depends on the size of the pond itself. Your pond must have a per-hour flow rate of about half the number of total gallons it is. For example, a 6,000-gallon pond must have a 3,000-gallons-per-hour flow rate in order to keep the pond clean.
Determining Pond Size
-
If you are unsure of the size of your pond, you will need to estimate it to determine the size of pump you need. Multiply the length of the pond by the width of the pond by the depth of the pond to get the cubic feet of the pond, and then multiply that number by 7.5. This gives you an estimation of the size of the pond in gallons.

Types

Ensure that you choose a pump specifically designed for outdoor ponds. These pumps may be external or submersible, and they will say what size of pond they are suitable for on the box.
