How Tall Can a Ficus Hedge Grow?

Grown as either a tree or hedge, ficus plants are deciduous and grown for their economic and ornamental value. Because they are easily pruned and have a great height and width, they are commonly made into hedges. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • Ficus hedges and trees have simple and alternating leaves with five finger-like lobes and are green in color. They have male and female flowers, though some hedges have all female flowers. The flowers are green and round but not showy. The ficus produces edible fruit that resembles a pear but is a purplish-brown color.

    Height

    • Ficus hedges have the ability to reach approximately 25 feet in height and just as wide. When in tree form, it can reach 30 feet in height with a trunk diameter of 7 inches or less. Its root system is shallow but capable of reaching 50 feet.

    Culture

    • Fig trees and hedges need pruning in the fall and winter to allow for proper growth in the spring and summer. Notch the branches to help increase the yield of fruit for the following year. If there are heavy rains, dig a ditch to allow for proper draining so that the plants don't become water-logged.
