Synthetic acid, also called salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide are the two main ingredients in acne cleansers and medications. Although they both treat and prevent mild to severe acne, each has a different chemical makeup that presents different uses and results.

Synthetic acid is a chemical synthesized in the bark of the willow tree and is used in acne medications as an anti-inflammatory and as a gentle peeling agent. Benzoyl peroxide is a chemical agent composed of benzoic acid and oxygen and is used as an antiseptic and as a stronger peeling agent.

Synthetic acid and benzoyl peroxide are available in topical acne medications such as foams, cleansing bars and pads, washes, shampoos, lotions, gels and creams. Synthetic acid is sold in concentrations strengths of .5 percent to 2 percent. Benzoyl peroxide is sold in concentrations of 2.5 percent to 10 percent.

Both synthetic acid and benzoyl peroxide work by peeling away the outer layer of dead skin cells and sebum, the oily substance in clogged pores that leads to acne breakouts. Synthetic acid dissolves blackheads and reduces inflammation. The oxygen in benzoyl peroxide penetrates pores to kill acne-causing bacteria.
Side Effects

Both medications can cause mild to severe allergic reactions; symptoms can vary depending on the concentration levels in the product and the sensitivity of the consumer. In addition, benzoyl peroxide is a bleaching agent that can discolor hair and clothing.
