Termites find some types of redwood lumber toxic.

In Arizona, drywood termites live and nest in undecayed wood. The pests can cause lots of damage to homes and other wood structures. One way to keep the pests to a minimum involves the use of redwood lumber and mulches. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Drywood Termites

    • Drywood termites are primarily found along the southern United States border as well as southern California and all of Arizona. The termites build their nests in the wood of the structure itself, rather than in the soil as do other types of termites. A colony of drywood termites usually contains about 10,000 of the insects.

    Wood

    • Arizona homes and fences made of redwood lumber, particularly from the heartwood of the tree, offer a natural repellent that termites find repulsive. Lumber made from the sapwood of the redwood tree, though, does not offer as much of a benefit in keeping termites away.

    Mulches

    • Mulches made from redwood chips also help keep termites away from your home, but only for a short amount of time. Once the natural toxins in the mulch leach into the soil, the mulch loses its toxicity to the termites.
