Can You Cut a Tree Branch & Plant It?
It is possible to propagate some trees and bushes by planting a branch or other stem cutting. This technique doesn't work for all trees, and it does require some care. However, propagation from cuttings is one of the simplest techniques available. Does this Spark an idea?

Tree Types
-
Many trees and woody ornamental shrubs grow well from cuttings, including boxwood, Japanese barberry, lilac, poplar and ginkgo. Some trees, such as willow, can root readily, while others require coaxing and careful treatment.
Propagation
-
Most branches are tip cuttings, and will root best during the growing season. Scrape a thin layer of bark from the base of the cutting, then dip the cut end in rooting hormone. Plant the dipped end of the cutting in a rooting medium and water thoroughly, then cover and wait until roots appear.

Considerations
-
During the fall or winter, take hardwood cuttings from dormant, mature branches, rather than tip cuttings. These cuttings work best for propagating deciduous shrubs and evergreens.
