SAE Porting Tool Information

SAE stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers. SAE is a developer of voluntary consensus standards for the automotive, aerospace and commercial vehicle industries. SAE has produced a series of porting tools that are categorized according to a range of criteria.

  1. Porting Tools

    • A porting tool is a tool used to alter the intake and exhaust ports of internal combustion engines in order to improve air flow quality and quantity. Porting can also alter an engine's power output.

    Categories

    • Porting tools are categorized according to a number of criteria. These include high-speed steel, carbide-tipped, straight shank, taper shank, extra-long reamer, coolant thru and solid carbide. All SAE porting tools have some combination of these attributes.

    Specifications

    • Porting tools are further categorized according to a range of specifications. These include tool number, tube number, tube size, thread size, reamer diameter, spotface diameter, reamer length, head length, oal length, angle, shank length and shank morse taper number.
