Correct Preparation for Cement Steps

Correct Preparation for Cement Steps thumbnail
Cement steps require concrete footings, not just a surface slab.

Constructing cement steps is no simple project, diligent and thorough preparation is essential. Check with your local building inspector for code requirements and always measure twice before you cut. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Measure

    • Determine the overall run of your steps, the depth of the steps from the farthest end of the landing to the base of the bottom step, and the overall rise, the height of the steps from the top of the landing to the ground level. Establish exact measurements using a wooden stake, mason's string and line level to plot out the footprint of your project.

    Sketch

    • Create a detailed sketch of your planned steps using a ruler and graph paper. Minimum safety guidelines require each step to be between 10 inches and 12 inches deep, and 6 inches to 8 inches high. The steps' landing must be 12 inches deeper than the radius swing of the door. Adjust your measurements, and sketch, accordingly.

    Footings

    • Cement steps require concrete footings, not just a surface slab; your local building code will have the exact depth requirements. Footings should be 12 inches wide, perpendicular to the adjacent structure's foundation, extend three inches beyond the steps' sides and reinforced with a rebar grid. Affix isolation boards to the foundation inside the trenches to prevent concrete from sticking.
