Aesculus Pavia Pests

The red buckeye (Aesculus pavia) is a shrub of the Central and Southeastern states. It is used for landscaping because of its colorful flowers. Red buckeye is resistant to plant diseases and has few serious insect pests, according to the Missouri Botanical Garden. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • Among the types of pests that sometimes attack the red buckeye are assorted beetles and their larvae. Other insects capable damaging to the plant include aphids, leafhoppers, mealybugs, caterpillars, scales, lace bugs, mites and spittlebugs.

    Effects

    • The symptoms of a pest infestation depend upon the creature responsible. When lace bugs are at work devouring the foliage and stems of a red buckeye, the leaves take on a whitish look and there is noticeable damage to the stems. Darkened, tiny droppings on the underneath surface of the leaves are also present.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Utilize different courses of action suited to what type of pest is on the species to protect the red buckeye. Larger pests, such as the Japanese beetle, are obvious enough to pick off the shrub by hand and placed in a container of soapy water. Other smaller pests, including mites, require the use of insecticidal soaps and sprays to keep them under control.
