  1. Location

    • Plant cannas in well-drained loamy soil with a high nutrient content and plenty of organic material, such as compost. Cannas prefer full sun but can grow well in partial shade.

    Planting Depth

    • Once the danger of hard frost has passed, plant canna rhizomes eyes up 1 to 2 feet apart. Larger cultivars need more space. Cover each rhizome with 2 to 3 inches of soil.

    Containers

    • Cannas also can be grown in containers but should not be planted on their own. Use a large pot or planter and add medium height borders and trailing flowers to provide more visual interest.
