Fabric to Use for Patio Umbrellas

Patio umbrellas are available in various types of fabrics.

Choosing a fabric for a patio umbrella should be largely based on the prevailing weather conditions of the area, frequency of use, budgetary considerations and warranties. Aesthetics and size are other factors for consideration.

Solution-Dyed Acrylic

Generally the priciest option, this material is the most durable and stands up well to rain, wind and sun. Solution-dyed fabrics are made from pre-dyed fibers instead of those dyed after the material is produced, which makes them impervious to fading. Most umbrellas in this category impart up to 98 percent UV protection and have a three-year warranty against fading.

Solution-Dyed Polyester

This solution-dyed polyester is less expensive than acrylic, easy to clean and reasonably durable. It carries a two-year warranty against fading and is a good choice for moderate umbrella needs.

Olefin & Acrylic Umbrellas

If an umbrella is needed for just one or two seasons, these are the best economically priced options. Olefin is a durable synthetic material similar to acrylic and both are lightweight and fade-resistant. The warranties for these types are normally good for one year.
