Removing the oxygen sensor requires a special slotted socket.

The oxygen sensor in the Jeep Liberty is part of the emissions control system. Oxygen in the exhaust gasses interacts with elements inside the sensor to generate a small voltage output. The Powertrain Control Module uses this information to regulate the Jeep's air-to-fuel mixture.

  1. The Sensors

    • On the 2.4 liter engine there are two sensors -- one in front of the catalytic converter and one after. On the 3.6 liter V6 there are four -- two on each exhaust bank.

    Sensor Locations

    • Bank one sensor one is on the left side of the engine. Bank two sensor one is on the right side of the engine. Pre-converter sensors are installed into the exhaust tube between the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter.

    Replacing the Sensors

    • The sensors have an electrical connector that must be disconnected prior to removal. A special slotted socket wrench available from an auto parts store is used to remove and replace the oxygen sensor.
