Identification
-
A retrofit window is simply a replacement window that fits into the existing window frame assembly. They differ from new construction windows which require the entire window frame assembly be removed and replaced.
Types
-
Maintenance depends on the type of retrofit window being installed. Aluminum and vinyl windows are extremely durable and offer low maintenance, due to their resistance to weather elements. Wood-clad is another low maintenance choice, offering the look of wood with an outer protective sleeve to protect the interior from weathering.

Considerations
-
Of all the types of retrofit windows, natural wood is the one with significant maintenance needs. Wood needs staining, sealants or painting on a regular basis to prevent rot and material disintegration from the outside elements.
