Do Fluorescent Lights Help Indoor Plants Grow?

Indoor light fixtures are commonly used to germinate seeds and provide supplemental light for container plants. Fluorescent lighting is one lighting method that provides aesthetic and practical benefits for indoor gardeners.

Effects

When used properly, fluorescent lights can help indoor plants to grow and thrive. Fluorescent lights should be placed no more than 1 foot away from the plant, preferably 4 to 6 inches. This is not the case for incandescent bulbs, which burn at much higher temperatures than fluorescent lights and may scorch plant leaves.

Specifications

For optimal results, choose fluorescent tubes that are labeled T8 or T5, which are the most energy-efficient models. These long-term savings will help compensate for higher upfront costs compared to incandescent lights.

Considerations

Fluorescent lights that have began to darken at the ends should be replaced, since their light quality is diminished. Leave the lights on for 12 to 16 hours each day for best results.
