Backyard Pond Problems

A well-kept backyard pond brings years of enjoyment.

A backyard pond turns an ordinary yard into a retreat that mimics the best of nature. Relaxing by the pond side with a cold drink after a hard day more than makes up for the labor and cost that go into creating the pond. It's not a perfect retreat, though, because there are some potential problems that need careful attention. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Limited Access

    • A quality pond is also a safe pond. Limiting access by younger children who are attracted to the flowers and fish is an absolute must. Neighborhood children should be fenced away from the pond, and young children in your home should never be left by the pond unsupervised.

    Cleanliness and Preventive Maintenance

    • Cleanliness and preventive maintenance are the keywords to enjoying a pond. All the mechanical systems such as the filter and electrical power should be checked and kept spotless and functioning. The water needs to be tested for proper pH balance and the algae kept under control. Failure to take care of these basic requirements will result in an odorous bog or marsh that will not sustain fish or other aquatic life.

    Healthy Fish

    • Pond fish and aquatic plants are kept in an artificial environment which may cause problems with their health. Knowing the needs of the fish -- such as having a deeper end for them to escape the summer heat and winter cold -- helps to maintain a pond that is alive, vibrant and growing every day before your eyes.
