How do I Change an Evinrude Outboard Water Pump?

How do I Change an Evinrude Outboard Water Pump? thumbnail
Water pumps can fail in outboard motors.

Small power boats utilize outboard motors to propel through the water. A common brand of outboard motor, called Evinrude, has a water pump that may need replacement over the life of the entire outboard motor.

  1. Identification

    • Outboard motors are the large engines that hang off the back of small boats. They contain a water pump that keeps the engine cool during use.

    Replacement

    • Evinrude outboard motors make their assemblies relatively simple to maintain and repair. Remove the lower portion of the motor; inside is the water pump body. Take off the top of the housing and glide the water pump impeller off of the driveshaft. Replace with a new assembly and reassemble.

    Considerations

    • Keep in mind that older outboard motors, such as those built before the 1950s, may have a different internal design. Replacing these water pumps may take a professional's help because their architecture may be too difficult to disassemble without proper tooling.
