How do I Change an Evinrude Outboard Water Pump?

Water pumps can fail in outboard motors.

Small power boats utilize outboard motors to propel through the water. A common brand of outboard motor, called Evinrude, has a water pump that may need replacement over the life of the entire outboard motor.

Identification

Outboard motors are the large engines that hang off the back of small boats. They contain a water pump that keeps the engine cool during use.

Replacement

Evinrude outboard motors make their assemblies relatively simple to maintain and repair. Remove the lower portion of the motor; inside is the water pump body. Take off the top of the housing and glide the water pump impeller off of the driveshaft. Replace with a new assembly and reassemble.

Considerations

Keep in mind that older outboard motors, such as those built before the 1950s, may have a different internal design. Replacing these water pumps may take a professional's help because their architecture may be too difficult to disassemble without proper tooling.
