The Growth Rate of an Avocado Tree in the Backyard

Avocado trees provide fruit annually.

Avocado trees can be grown in tropical areas where they will not be subject to low temperatures, snow or frost. The rate of tree growth depends heavily on growing conditions.

Ideal Growing Conditions

In ideal growing conditions, including deep, loose soil that is well-drained and regular watering and sunlight, an avocado tree can grow several feet each year. Healthy growing conditions encourage faster growth.

Height

Although avocado trees can reach 80 feet tall at maturity, most trees are shorter than that due to a lack of growing space. Providing adequate room for root systems and the canopy of the tree will prevent the tree from become stunted or growing slowly.

Annual Growth

Annual growth rates change based on the age and health of the tree. Young trees are more likely to grow faster than mature trees, and unhealthy trees may experience a slow growing season.
