Why Is My Notebook Battery Showing Zero Percent When It Is Charged?

It is important for a notebook computer to sustain its battery charge. If your battery indicator keeps showing a 0 percent charge, understanding what may be causing the problem is essential to its usage.

Operating System

  • If the power indicator says "0%, plugged in, not charging," this may indicate a problem with the operating system. Shut down the computer, unplug the power adapter, remove the battery and wait for at least one minute before inserting it back into its compartment. Turn the notebook back on and see if the power indicator status changes. If it is no longer showing 0 percent, it may be that the notebook was charging the entire time, just not responding to the operating system and therefore showing an incorrect battery reading.

  • If the battery indicator is showing 0 percent, the power adapter may be supplying power to the notebook but is failing to load power to the battery. Try disconnecting the power adapter and see if the computer shuts down. If it does, it indicates a problem with your battery.

Power Adapter

  • Ensure that the power adapter is plugged into an active power outlet and the power port of the notebook if the battery is showing 0 percent or is not charging. If the power outlet is active and the connection between the power adapter and the notebook is properly secured, but the battery is still not charging, the notebook power adapter may need to be replaced.
