Beer Bottle Edging in a Garden

Beer and wine bottles can find a second life as garden edging.

The next time you have a cold beverage on a hot summer day, consider saving the bottle instead of tossing it into the recycle bin. Beer and wine bottles can be reused to create a funky, unexpected garden border. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Considerations

    • Creating garden edging from recycled bottles is simple -- just push the neck of the bottle down into the soil so that the bottom of the bottle is facing up. Repeat until you have enough edging to encircle your garden. The most difficult task will be collecting enough bottles. Ask your friends to save colorful and interesting beer and wine bottles for you. Scope out the glass bins at the recycling center or ask your favorite bar to save the empties for you. Use different sizes and colors of bottles for additional visual interest.

    Benefits

    • Edging made from recycled bottles won't rot or decay. Used bottles are also free, making this method a very cost-effective edging solution. This is also a way to keep bottles out of the landfill if your neighborhood doesn't offer glass recycling. The bottles can easily be used to outline different shapes -- graceful curves, sharp angles or plain old rectangles.

    Warning

    • Avoid installing recycled bottle edging in areas where children may play. It's advisable to install bottle edging in areas where it's not going to be accidentally damaged, either. A low-traffic corner of the yard is ideal.
