Resin beads are present in water softening systems, these beads are usually coated in potassium or sodium. The resin beads attract the positively charged ions of calcium and magnesium that are exchanged with the sodium and potassium coating on the resin beads.
Types

Water softening systems can be equipped with an automatic cleaning system for the resin beads or can require manual cleaning. A cleaning solution is applied directly to the resin that removes the magnesium and calcium from the beads in waste water.
