Radio Frequency Identification is becoming more common for the tracking of objects in real time. This application has particular potential for the retail sector, and in logistics and supply chain management.

Working

RFID involves using a minute microchip embedded in an object. The chip sends out signals that an RFID reader can track. This enables the tracking of the object.

Drawbacks

Sometimes, the RFID tags cannot be read with utmost accuracy due to issues such as a limited read range or due to interference, such as from water or metal, in transmitting the signals. This could result in a loss of sales in the retail sector.

Use of Multiple RFID Readers

To make for a more accurate reading, multiple RFID users are sometimes used for scanning the RFID tags. These multiple readers could be used to scan at, for instance, an entryway or provide overhead scanning.
