Saab Engine Failure Information

Between 2005 and 2007, Saab extended warranties on select models with noted engine problems. Saab USA issued a statement on June 20, 2005, that explained why warranties needed to be expanded to cover an "engine sludge" problem.

  1. Engine Sludge

    • The Saab engine failure problem was a result of sludge building up in the engine due to oil thickening. According to The Center of Auto Safety, moisture and contaminants break down oil, and cause it to thicken and eventually gel. The engine isn't well-lubricated when the oil gels, and seizures then can occur.

    Affected Models

    • In the official letter to vehicle owners, Saab highlighted four models that were specifically affected by the engine sludge problem. Both Saab 9-3 and 9-5 were susceptible to engine sludge. Saab 9-5 models with four-cylinder engines manufactured from 1999 to 2003, 9-3 models made from 2000 to 2002, 9-3 convertibles made between 2000 and 2003, and 9-3 Viggens constructed between 1999 and 2002 all were affected.

    Warranty Extension

    • The original five-year manufacturer's warranty was extended to eight years after Saab discovered the engine sludge issue. All affected vehicles were given unlimited mileage, even though Saab estimated that only 4 per cent of engines were prone to failure. Regular oil changes help prevent the problem.
