Sow nasturtium seed in late spring.

Nothing announces summer in Florida like a peppery nasturtium salad. The edible leaves of tall and dwarf nasturtium serve as a garnish and greens in salads. Plant nasturtium seeds alongside your other garden crops or as a stand-alone ornamental. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Time Frame

    • You can plant nasturtium seeds on bare soil in spring, or start seed indoors in pots four to six weeks before the last frost. Set the seeds 1 inch deep and space 2 to 3 inches apart.

    Conditions

    • Sow nasturtium seeds in full sun and sandy soil. The plants tolerate midday shade but will not produce as many blooms in full shade. Nasturtium does not tolerate a hard freeze or too much nitrogen fertilizer. Nasturtium plants survive drought but require weekly watering to bloom.

    Considerations

    • Continue to plant nasturtium seeds until fall. If you live in the southern part of the state, you can plant nasturtium seeds year round, according to the University of Florida IFAS Extension's plant profile webpage.
