Stainless steel sinks are often chosen based on their appearance, which complements the decor of a sleek, high-tech kitchen as nicely as one decorated in a rustic, homespun motif. As with most decorating options, other features warrant consideration.
Stainless steel is durable and will never crack, chip or break. The surface deters the growth of harmful bacteria since it is nonporous and easy to thoroughly clean. The sink bowl is normally larger and has a flatter bottom than cast iron or porcelain sinks because it can be easily molded into any shape or size.
Despite its glossy, strong surface, stainless steel is not impervious to scratches. Some finishes also have a grain to them that can become blotchy and unsightly if rubbed with abrasives that go against the pattern in the metal. Mineral deposits and water spots are easily visible on stainless steel sinks, so they require frequent wiping with a soft cloth to keep them shiny.
Although it is not necessary to buy the most expensive sink, higher gauges of stainless steel better resist scratching and improve the sound absorption of pots, pans and garbage disposal motors. Homeowners and builders frequently recommend sinks made from 18-gauge steel or thicker.
