Corn Plant Leaf Care Information

Corn plants (Dracaena fragrans) are tropical foliage plants desirable for their long, attractive leaves. These plants are relatively hardy and are often grown as houseplants. Because the leaves are what make the plant attractive, they require special attention. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Care

    • Keep the leaves clean of dust by wiping them with a damp cloth on a regular basis. Leaves that are not cleaned will develop a layer of dust and debris. This may attract mites and thrips, both of which are common pests of the corn plant.

    Warning

    • Corn plants are susceptible to leaf spot diseases. These are usually fungi and occur when water is left to sit on the leaves. The spots may be yellow, brown or black, depending on the fungus. Prevent leaf spot from developing by keeping the leaves dry. Water at the level of the soil, and, if your plant is outside, set it where it will receive morning sunlight, which will quickly dry any dew.

    Considerations

    • Sometimes the tips of corn plant leaves will turn brown. This can happen if the soil is too wet, but also if it is too dry. Keep the soil evenly moist. In general, water when the top of the soil is barely moist to the touch. Do not use rainwater, as it can be too acidic for the plant and may turn the leaves brown.
