OpenOffice is a free alternative for desktop publishing and word processing.

OpenOffice is a free open source alternative to Microsoft Office. Offering many of the same features, this product allows you to save documents as .doc files, the same file extension as Microsoft products. Occasionally OpenOffice has performance issues.

  1. Preparation

    • Verify your system meets the minimum system requirements for installing OpenOffice. Some substandard systems will accept installation but perform poorly. For Windows, OpenOffice3 requires a system with Windows 2000 SP2 or later, 256 MB of RAM (though 512 MB is recommended) and 650 MB of disk space available for installation. Complete a thorough spyware and virus scan and defragment your system.

    Installation

    • OpenOffice may be running slowly due to graphic cache and memory limitations. Install OpenOffice clicking "Typical" for installation type and "Create a start link on desktop." Save all installation files. Once installed, activated and updated completely, click "Options" and "Working Memory" and increase the graphic cache from 64 MB to 128 MB and "Memory Per Object" from 8 MB to 32 MB to free limitations that can slow the opening of a document. Fully update Java.

    Adjustments

    • Verify antivirus or antispyware products are not interfering with OpenOffice; these can also cause the program to perform slowly. Check your virus storage location for anything that references OpenOffice or Java, and restore them as needed. Be certain there are not multiple instances of the "soffice.bin" file running. See this by clicking "Control" and "Alt" and "Delete" simultaneously and, in Task Manager, clicking the "Processes" tab. If there are two running, remove OpenOffice and reinstall.
