Building a home takes the consideration of many factors, including soil stability. If a home is to withstand the test of time, building engineers must create stable foundation solutions, such as concrete pillars.
A typical home sits on a concrete foundation, or slab. Before constructing the slab, the ground beneath is analyzed to verify that it can securely hold a heavy building structure. If the ground is volatile or has the potential for significant movement, such as in an earthquake prone region, supports must be constructed to hinder slab movement and disintegration.
Concrete pillars can be placed under a slab to secure the foundation to the ground, rather than just having the slab float over the ground composition. This pillar system allows the slab to move with the ground motion to prevent major breaking of the concrete pour.
Concrete is one of the main choices of engineers for pillar construction. Using another material, such as wood, brings in issues of pillar disintegration due to aging and wear.
