MS Messenger & Skype Compatibility
Skype is well-know for voice calling and communication. One of its lesser-know features is a chat protocol. Likewise MS Messenger is best-known as a instant messaging platform, however, it has also evolved to include voice and video communication.

Skype and Messenter General Uses

Skype and MS Messenger both use Internet protocols focused on computer to computer communication. Skype is generally known for voice-to-voice calling through a computer, video conferencing and low-cost PC to phone calling. For PC-to-PC calling, both individuals must use Skype in order to connect. MS Messenger was originally developed for text based chatting with a contact list. In order to send and receive messages to others, users must have Messenger.
Skype and Messenger Compatibility

As of January 2011, Skype and Messenger use different protocols for communication and although many of their features are similar, users on Skype cannot connect to users on Messenger. The latest version of Live Messenger is a direct competitor to Skype because of its ability to handle voice chatting to PC's and phones and provide video chatting.

Skype and MS Messenger Integration

While there is no way to chat or initiate voice calls between Skype and Messenger, it is possible to integrate contact lists from both programs into one interface. There are several instant messenger clients that allow users to import messaging platforms such as Skype and MS Messenger into a combined buddy list.
