Long trips in a Jeep may prove costly.

Like most sport utility vehicles, the majority of 1990 Jeep models have poor gas mileage. If you are concerned about your Jeep's gas mileage, determine if it's within the normal range. Take corrective action if it is significantly lower.

  1. Normal Mileage

    • The 1990 Jeep Wrangler travels 14 to 19 mpg, and the Cherokee gets 15 to 22 mpg. Mileage will trend toward the lower portions of these ranges on models with four-wheel-drive and automatic transmissions.

    Improvements

    • The government recommends taking unnecessary items out of the Jeep -- and adequately inflating the tires -- to remedy poor gas mileage. Take your 1990 Jeep to a mechanic or dealership for a tune-up if it has not been serviced regularly.

    Tire Size

    • Some drivers put large, tall tires on Jeep vehicles. Large tires yield a mild improvement in fuel economy, but wide tires have the opposite effect.
