Stair Baluster Safety

A stair baluster is a shaft usually made of stone or wood that rusn between the stairs and parapet or handrail of a staircase. Balusters provide some safety concerns, particularly for small children. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Function

    • The primary function of balusters is to provide support to the handrail. For this reason, one of the most important safety concerns is a lack of support for the handrail which can lead to accidents when weight is applied.

    Types

    • There are many types of balusters including those made of stone, wood and metal. Wood balusters are commonly used inside the home. Some are made of intricate designs with aesthetics as the primary goal. However, many balusters are made to provide maximum support and safety.

    Safety

    • A major concern surrounding stair balusters are the spaces in between them. If there is sufficient space, a child may become trapped or possibly climb through them from a significant height from higher on the stair case or second floor.

    Prevention/Solution

    • To prevent accidents, choose balusters based on the amount of support they provide and make sure they are properly installed and combine well with the stairs and handrail. There are also safety gates that can be installed around balusters to prevent children from hurting themselves.
