Range hoods remove pollutants and odors from kitchens by venting smoke and airborne grease outside through metal ducts of various standard sizes. When installing a range hood, size the ductwork properly to ensure optimal performance of the ventilator.
Common Range Hood
The size requirements for most range hoods allow a minimum diameter of 6 inches for circular ducts or 3 1/4 inch by 10 inch for rectangular. The least powerful, more economical range hoods, exhausting a range of 100 to 300 cubic feet of air per minute (CFM), typically require 6- or 7-inch diameter ducts.
High Performance Range Hood
Range hoods with powerful fans of more than 400 CFM require larger ductwork. Most installation instructions for high-performance range hoods specify single or double ducts in standard sizes of 7-, 8- or 10-inch diameters.
Do not use 4-inch dryer duct or plastic duct of any size for venting a range hood. When renovating and switching from a low-power to a high-performance range hood, always install larger ductwork as required by the new hood. Install ducting in the shortest, straightest path possible and do not exceed the maximum length of pipe allowed. If in doubt, contact a qualified ventilation designer or installer.
