CAD Software for Builders

Computer-aided design, or CAD, is a graphing and drafting tool for professional engineers in many industries, including building and construction. Many types of CAD-based software exist for builders.

  1. History

    • IBM first pioneered CAD programs in the late 1950s, which made it possible for designers to use computers in designing their projects faster, more efficiently and more accurately. Over the years, programmers further developed CAD software, with many programs tailored for specific applications, including architecture and building.

    Features

    • CAD software enables builders and structural designers to construct virtual projects on the computer using lines and preformed shapes and entities. CAD software gives instant calculations such as support requirements and energy use based on the inputs given by the user, such as building size, type of materials, shape and installations.

    Types

    • Builders use many types of CAD programs. Architectural CAD programs help architects and builders draft homes and commercial buildings. Contractors also use special CAD-based building tools to design and properly install plumbing systems; electrical systems; and heating, ventilation and cooling systems.
