In the United States, 3,443 people died from drowning in 2007 alone. One in five of these victims were children under age 14. Pool safety grants work to reduce the rate of drowning deaths and injuries. Does this Spark an idea?

Grants for Government Agencies

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission offers pool safety grants through the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. This legislation was passed in 2007 with the intent of reducing rates of drowning and drain entrapment among children. Grant money is distributed through state governments.
Grants for Safety Research

The National Swimming Pool Foundation offers an annual grant to support "research and academic studies related to swimming pool and spa injury and illness prevention," according to guidelines. Grant recipients must publish the results of the grant-funded study in the "International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education." Nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status are eligible to apply.

Grants for Safety Programs and Education

The ZAC Foundation supports programs that work to improve pool safety through policy analysis, advocacy efforts and public education. Areas of focus include safer swimming experiences, education for pool installers and inspectors, and encouraging responsiveness from regulatory authorities. Nonprofit groups are eligible to apply.
