Small Trailer Regulations

Rules and regulations regarding the use of trailers are administered through state legislation. Small trailers are usually defined as those carrying loads of up to 2,000 lbs.

Basics

The basic regulations used by the majority of states include the requirement of tail lights on all trailers. The registration of a trailer with a state Department of Motor Vehicles is also usually required in some states, including Massachusetts and California.

Inspections

States requiring automobile inspections such as Massachusetts do not require the inspection of small trailers. However, the Massachusetts DOT requires trailers to be equipped with fenders, two tail lights, stop lights and safety chains.

Responsibility

It is the responsibility of the driver of the towing vehicle to ensure the small trailer is fit for the road. For example, in California the driver of the vehicle must ensure the trailer has tail lights if the towing vehicle's lights are hidden by the trailer.
