Screw Conveyor Safety

Screw conveyors are widely used in industrial and agricultural applications for the bulk transport of materials, such as grains, granules and powders. Safety is a prime concern in the design and manufacture of screw conveyors, as well as their installation, maintenance and use.

  1. Installation

    • Immediately after installation, a screw conveyor should be run, unloaded, for a period between four and eight hours. During this period, look and listen for noise, vibration or any signs the drive unit or bearings of the screw conveyor are overheating.

    Operation

    • Employers should only allow workers certified in the safe operation of machinery to operate or maintain screw conveyors. Even so, safety labels should be fixed on, and in the vicinity of, screw conveyors to remind operators and maintenance workers of the inherent safety hazards.

    Inspection

    • Employers should also carry out safety inspections on screw conveyors from time to time. These inspections may reveal unsafe conditions, such as the misalignment of shafts, adequate lubrication or the failure of safety measures, such as interlocks or railings.
