The Best Fertilizer for Arborvitae

Arborvitae is a common landscape planting--a pyramid-shaped tree that grows to 50 feet tall. It thrives in moist soil and full sun. Little fertilizer is required to keep arborvitae healthy.

Fertilizer

Lawn fertilizer, such as 21-5-6, is ideal for arborvitae. The high nitrogen content will help the tree develop strong foliage and retain its shape.

Timing

Arborvitae requires commercial fertilizer once a year, in the spring. It will, however, benefit, from an application of 3 inches of compost to the soil around it in the summer.

Rate

Use 2 to 4 pounds of fertilizer per 100 square feet of area in which the arborvitae resides. Apply it to the soil and water well to activate the fertilizer and spread it to the roots.
