Will Onstar Work With a Broken Antenna?

Will Onstar Work With a Broken Antenna? thumbnail
GPS technology was first created in 1979.

OnStar is a global positioning system (GPS) service provider that uses satellites for various telematic automotive needs. Although your vehicle's OnStar system works through satellite technology, an OnStar-specific antenna is required to receive a signal. The antenna has three major components that must be fully intact in order for your OnStar unit to work correctly.

  1. Antenna Rod

    • The rod is the most visible and distinguishable part of the antenna. It is made of a thin metal alloy which provides a protective coating for OnStar's antenna cable. The rod is the conductor of your antenna, as it physically receives the OnStar satellite waves.

    Antenna Base

    • The base of the OnStar antenna attaches the rod to your vehicle. Its construction is of a larger and more solid metallic alloy than the rod.

    Antenna Cable

    • The antenna of an OnStar system has a cable that is attached inside the base and rod. This cable distributes the data that is received from the OnStar satellites in order to perform various functions.
