Fiberglass Vs. Metal Automotive Bodies

Automobile manufacturing has changed significantly over the years. The main body of the car is no longer just metal, but can be made of varying materials, such as fiberglass, or a mixture of both substances.

Metal Body

  • Metal was the original material used for car bodies. The advantage of metal is that it can be altered, whether by welding or a simple pounding from a ballpeen hammer. But, drawbacks can be numerous, from being extremely heavy to having a tendency to corrode.

Fiberglass Body

  • Fiberglass can emulate the look of a metal-bodied car, but without the weight of a metal body. In addition, fiberglass is corrosion-resistant, keeping the body looking newer for longer. But, fiberglass is difficult to alter compared to metal and can warp with applied heat.

Considerations

  • Overall, both materials offer benefits and drawbacks. In the end, cost can be a major factor when choosing between the two substances. Fiberglass tends to be less expensive than metal.
