Pendant lights can be used in various areas throughout the home, including in foyers, over side tables or dining tables and above the kitchen island. When lighting a kitchen island, consider several factors prior to hanging any pendant light.
When hanging a pendant light over an island, measure the height of the island. Islands that have bar-style seating on one side may require the pendant lights to be hung at a higher height.
Pendant Light Height
The bottom of the pendant should be between 30 to 36 inches from the counter top, according to Joe Rey-Barreau of the American Lighting Association.
Heights of the family members should be taken into consideration when hanging a pendant light. If the family has members who are tall, then the pendant light over the island should higher to accommodate them; anywhere from 36 inches to 40 inches above the island should be adequate.
