Low pressure fuel systems use fuel injectors that operate at less than standard pressure levels.

Fuel injection refers to a system for combining air with fuel in an internal combustion engine. Low pressure, fuel injection systems perform this function, but offer a different method of fuel delivery.

  1. Definition

    • Standard fuel injection systems use pumps to forcibly push fuel through a nozzle under high pressure. Low pressure injection systems contain injectors that spray atomized fuel at lower pressure levels (2 million Pascals of force per area (2 MPa)) into the combustion chambers to improve combustion efficiency. Low pressure injection systems atomize fuel by blowing gas through a constricted nozzle to reduce the fuel's pressure. The fuel, once boiled at low pressure, sprays out in small droplets.

    Benefits

    • Low pressure fuel systems deliver almost instant fuel atomization and pressurization, which facilitates a cold engine start. Low pressure fuel systems also offer better fuel economy and reduced emissions.

    Disadvantages

    • Low pressure fuel systems do not come standard in most automobiles and the in-tank pump, fuel rail and soft spray fuel injectors must therefore be retrofitted. Low pressure fuel systems are considered specialized systems and therefore more expensive than standard fuel systems.
